Dallas Labor Hits the Streets
Campaign block walking and phone banking begin at 10AM on Saturday, February 10, from 1408 N Washington. Labor is starting early and hitting hard!
[caption caption="There is no substitute for direct contact" align="center"]The first target area will be Texas House District 104, where labor champion Roberto Alonzo faces a worrisome challenge in the March 6 primary election. The district takes in Southwestern Oak Cliff and a big chunk of Grand Prairie.
Dallas AFL-CIO Political Director Lorraine Montemayor encourages everybody who believes in democracy to participate. No previous experience is required!
Democracy Downgraded
The United States was downgraded from “democracy” to “flawed democracy” by The Economist. We are no longer in the company of the Scandinavians, and have joined the Italians and Mongolians in terms of people’s ability to affect government.
Unionists know that the right to organize is what creates democracy and keeps it working. The sad story is that attacks against organizing continue. A major Supreme Court decision in the “Janus Case” is expected in February. If the five anti-worker judges vote their usual way, all American public-sector unions will fall into the same “right to work/scab” category that Texans already suffer. A major “Day of Action” has been called for the entire nation on February 24.
Twu's Gwen York Injured
Transport Workers Union leader Gwen York has sustained a serious injury. AFL-CIO Principal Officer Mark York sent this update: "CT scan this morning looked good. She is still in a coma and on life support." Please continue to send your prayers to Sister Gwen, Mark, Family and Doctors. Watch our Facebook Page for new developments.
Ballots Aren’t Our Only Weapons
AFL-CIO members joined the Alliance/AFT school employee’s union on Monday, February 5, to protest the attacks against public schooling. Community groups such as the Texas Organizing Project participate in the coalition, “Our Community, Our Schools.” We tend to win when we stand together.\
Dallas labor participates in every arena where our rights can be defended!
Job Fair Underway
Labor activists are supporting Project Phoenix in a job fair underway February 9 at 1408 N Washington. Low rates of unemployment mean that job seekers do not have to take low-level jobs, but can get the union advantage!
