Labor Day Coming Fast

The Dallas AFL-CIO Labor Day breakfast is the premier union event of the year and the kickoff for labor’s participation in the upcoming critical election year. There will be plenty of room and parking this year at Eddie Deen Ranch, 944 Lamar Street.

Tickets are $35 and sponsorships are needed. Contact Cindy Crofford at 214-826-4808 or Lewis Fulbright at 214-354-9516.

The upcoming Labor Day was the main topic at the Central Labor Council meeting on August 17, but there was a tremendous volume of other important business. Three more candidates sought labor support. The monthly third-Thursday CLC is the heart of the progressive movement in Dallas.

Dirla Wins Labor History

A two-week contest ended on August 17 at the Central Labor Council meeting when Al Dirla of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1338 claimed the winning ticket. His prize was the new labor history book, “Frank Little and the IWW.” The book fills an important gap for the history of working families.

Labor Can Get Your Donations

For the first time ever, donations to the United Way fund drive can be designated for an important Dallas labor project. At the August 17 meeting, Elaine Adkison of Texas New Era/Project Phoenix asked union donors to allow funds to help with her project to find good apprentices for the Building Trades from among new veterans and non-violent first-time offenders.

Project Phoenix connects veterans, judges and unions to find ways to establish solid families based on good union jobs.

Labor Opposes Racism

“I’ll be there when the anti-racists gather,” says Dallas AFL-CIO principal officer Mark York, “Labor will stand with you against white supremacy.” The Rally Against White Supremacy is at Dallas City Hall at 7:30PM on Saturday, August 19.

National AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said, “This racism and bigotry is the worst kind of evil in our world!”

Communications Workers District Director Claude Cummings laid the blame very specifically, “What is new and can no longer be ignored is that the racist resentment and divisions pulling our country apart are tolerated and enabled by our President.”

Union people will look for you at City Hall Plaza.
