Dallas Labor Beats the Big Money

In the Dallas elections on May 6, the big money and the establishment newspaper did everything they could think of against some of labor's endorsed candidates. It didn't work out well for them, but it did for us! 

Dallas Labor Scores Well in Election

Tiffinni Young will need labor's help to win her runoff election​After careful information gathering and deliberation, the Dallas AFL-CIO delegates endorsed in all but one of the Dallas City Council races plus one race in Mesquite. All but two of our candidates succeeded in the first round of voting on May 1. Two are in runoffs. We'll continue to throw ourselves into making sure that working families are represented in the June 10th results. Principal Officer Honored

All union election efforts are run on a strictly non-partisan basis, but the increasing polarity between the parties has inclined working people in our area more and more toward the Democrats. They are exceedingly grateful when they get our help, and they showed it recently by giving a special award to the Financial Secretary Treasurer of the Dallas AFL-CIO, Mark York.

On his Facebook page, York wrote, "I am humbled and grateful to receive this year's "David Axelrod" award from the Dallas Democratic Party. Without the UNITY of the Dallas Unions, Community Partners and Organizations. The advancements towards helping our community would not be possible and I share this award with ALL of them."

The Republican "health care" bill in the Senate is an atrocity far worse than the last one. Protests will take place across the nation on Friday, May 12. Judy Bryant of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans Educatoinal Fund is organizing the Dallas event outside the offices of Congressman Pete Sessions, who voted in favor of undermining Medicare, Cutting Medicaid, and greatly increasing the amounts insurance companies can charge in order to give more billions to the very wealthy.

 The Dallas AFL-CIO Facebook page contains a short video of our triumphant candidate for City Council, Philip Kingston, explaining why he favors a legal attack against the so-called "Sanctuary Bill" just passed by the Texas Legislature. Our May 18 delegates' meeting will review our election work and strategize the best way to win the runoff election and all our other battles. For workers' organizations, it's fight or die!
