Dallas Labor Meets Tomorrow at ATU 1338 Hall
The Dallas AFL-CIO Central Labor Council meeting will take place on June 28. At 7:30 PM. Come to the Amalgamated Transit Union Hall, 1111 Empire Central Place, Dallas, TX 75247. Big developments, both good and bad, need to be taken into our strategic consideration.
The Bad News
The U.S. Supreme Court has dealt a number of stunning blows against working families and directly against our right to organize. The Janus Vs AFSCME case tops the list. Here is the statement from National AFL-CIO:
"America’s workers are marching and joining together as we haven’t seen in generations, and the labor movement’s popularity is climbing, which is why the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision today in Janus v. AFSCME is so out of touch and another ugly example of corporate overreach to rig the economic rules against working people.
'As AFL‑CIO President Richard Trumka said today, “We have never depended on any politician or judge to decide our fate, and we aren’t about to start now.”
'Five justices on the Supreme Court just did away with four decades of commonsense precedent, further rigging the economic rules to benefit powerful corporate interests at the expense of hardworking Americans. It won’t slow us down. Janus was far from the first corporate attack on working people, and it certainly won’t be the last. We will stick to what we do best. We’re organizing, marching, voting and leading a revolution to demand what’s rightfully ours.
'A wave of collective action is sweeping the country on a scale that we haven’t seen in years. Workers, especially young people, are signing union cards by the tens of thousands. Meanwhile, our movement’s approval rating has surged to a nearly two-decade high.
'Here’s the truth: Our future is in our hands. Working people are on the rise, and no amount of dark money or corporate lobbying can change that.Estimated corporate funding for just one of the dark, right-wing networks behind the Janus case was $80 million!
Support working people’s freedom!"
The Good News
Dallas labor will get a full report on our participation in last weekend's Texas Democratic Party Convention and the pro-worker platform they brought forward. We will lay plans for standing up to the corporate/political anti-worker offensive, including winning the November elections.
We will also plan out how to continue our great success with the paid sick time campaign.
Communication Is Even More Critical
Labor Communications are steadily improving. The Texas AFL-CIO began a “click to call” on line initiative to help activists reach their congresspersons on the issue of separation of families. Click on https://actionnetwork.org/forms/familiesbelongtogether. They are also establishing a YouTube channel for pro-worker videos. They ask everyone to subscribe at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdf8Kri2-kfG8LyMuk8znFQ.
