The Dallas Peace and Justice Center held its annual awards banquet at the Doubletree Hotel on Caruth-Haven Street December 6th. Your Dallas AFL-CIO was represented.

Among the first of the special people introduced was Mark York, leader of the Dallas AFL-CIO. Our own DJ Garza of UAW 2320 received an award on behalf of a coalition she organized to benefit area immigrants. Our Sergeant-at-Arms, Gene Lantz, introduced the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Around 275 activists attended. Tickets were $100.

The Dallas Peace and Justice Center and its predecessors draw on a long tradition of progressive activism in North Texas. This year’s winner of the Lifetime Achievement award, Jan Sanders, has been involved in progressive activities at least since John Kennedy’s presidential campaign sixty years ago! She is still going strong!

The Dallas AFL-CIO links progressive North Texas organizations for maximum effectiveness.

Texas Legislature Looms Ahead

Every two years, the Texas Legislature holds its regular session. The next one begins January 8. Labor leaders will meet every morning at the AFL-CIO building across the street from the capitol to influence legislation on behalf of working people.

Our organization is the United Labor Legislative Committee (ULLCO) which includes all AFL-CIO unions. They even invite the unions that have not yet affiliated so they can make sure that all the views of Texas working families are represented.

Texas Republicans remain in control. Some of them are members of the American Legislative Executive Council (ALEC). ALEC directs anti-worker legislation in every state. One of their main goals is nationwide “Right to Scab” laws such as we have in Texas.

When pro- or anti--worker legislation is pending, ULLCO puts out the call for statewide letter-writing, phone calling, personal visits, and lobbying efforts. The influence of working families is vast if we are informed and organized. Don’t be caught unawares! Write to ed@texasaflcio.org today to get on the mailing list.
