The Dallas AFL-CIO Central Labor Council meeting on December 20 was a short one. The longest part of it was swearing in one new Executive Board member, which takes about a minute. Afterward, it was Christmas party time at the Independent Bar in Deep Ellum.

In addition to a good turnout from delegates and their spouses, several important political figures attended. City Councilmen Scott Griggs, Philip Kingston, and Adam Medrano attended; newly elected State Representatives Terry Meza and Ana-Maria Ramos were there; Judge Pamela Luther came; two declared candidates, Regina Montoya and DeDe Alexander mixed with the crowd. AFL-CIO leader Mark York introduced each of them to share some of their political thoughts and Christmas greetings. See our Facebook Page for many more photos.

Adkison Boosting Project Phoenix

Labor’s program to help first-time offenders avoid a lifetime in prison is not dying away if Elaine Adkison has anything to do with it. She recently volunteered her time to help arrange a very helpful donation from the Communications Workers of America. Individual CWA members were already helping by designating their United Way payroll deductions to Project Phoenix.

Citizenship Program Moves Ahead

The Dallas AFL-CIO is working with the school employees of Alliance/AFT to provide help for union members and their associates who want to apply for United States citizenship. AFL-CIO President George Rangel presided over their second forum meeting at 334 Centre Street on December 15. He had powerful backing from experts like community organizer DJ Garza and Attorney Hannah Alexander.

Communications Workers Need Our Help

The union federation and constituent unions are committed to helping all working families. The CWA is an outstanding union for their broad help for all. But sometimes they need help, too.

Greedy AT&T officials lobbied for, and received, great gobs of money from the Republican’s giant tax giveaway at the end of last year. They promised big benefits for their employees, too.

But instead of creating jobs, AT&T continues to cut jobs, and the company refuses to bargain a fair contract that keeps jobs in our communities.

When members of Congress come back to Washington next month we need to flood their offices with emails, letters and phone calls demanding that they find out what happened to the billions of dollars of our money that they gave away to AT&T.
