Why We Organize and Fight
North Texas is seeing unprecedented levels of worker militancy and strategic organizing!
Federal Employees Will Rally
Come out at 11:30AM on August 8th to 1201 Elm Street in Dallas on behalf of union rights.
American Federal Government Employees Local 1003 President Jeanne Schulze is calling for more action. Democracy and the right to organize are under attack everywhere! Among other things, the Trump Administration has limited union officers’ ability to represent members and kicked unions out of their offices!
At the same time, the Trump Administration is making it harder and harder for public workers to provide services to all of us. This is especially true with workers of the Environmental Protection Agency, who are represented by Local 1003 in Dallas.
Airline Caterers Build Powerful Coalition
Sky Chef employees received pledges of assistance from a broad coalition of unions, churches, political office-holders and community groups at a breakfast August 2 at 1408 N Washington. Dallas AFL-CIO leader Mark York opened the event with a stirring call for unity. He was followed by a procession of catering service employees. They service passengers of American Airlines. Employees explained the hardships they endure under present working conditions. “How do you expect us to survive?” asked one of them.
Two state representatives, Ana Maria Ramos and Terry Meza, were among those who made stirring commitments to win this battle. The point was made, over and over, that bringing up the lowest paid workers is in everyone’s interest.
Reverend Wes Helm of Faith in Texas quoted from the Book of James “A warning to the rich.” He added, “It is my belief that poverty wages are an affront to God!”
Organizer Kara Sheehan of Texas New Era/Jobs with Justice explained that the Sky Chef fight is a national one, but that “It really comes down to Dallas,” because Dallas is the hub for American Airlines.
