Solidarity Grows
Dallas AFL-CIO principal officer Mark York joined the Governor of Montana on the General Motors picket lines in Arlington on September 26. A special solidarity meeting was hosted by the UAW Area Retiree Council at UAW 848 in Grand Prairie on September 24. State Representative Terry Meza brought several cases of water. Some of the retirees and a younger member of ATU 1338, Tony Dahlin, then drove to Roanoke, Texas, to join strikers from a smaller General Motors union local.
The Tarrant County AFL-CIO continues to accept donations for the strikers through their web site, http://tcclc.org. Volunteer picketers are welcome at UAW 276, 2505 W.E. Roberts in Grand Prairie. Birabil Finds Support
Lorraine Birabil, who was endorsed by the Dallas AFL-CIO in her race for State Representative District 100, received support and contributions at a house party on September 25. Birabil said that house parties are a good way to campaign, especially because voters now look at the number of contributions received (not the amount) as a way of evaluating candidates.
The Dallas AFL-CIO will begin its get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts on October 5 at 10AM from 1408 N Washington. The special election for District 100 is November 5.
Keener Speaks at Climate Rally
Communications Worker Local 6215 activist Herb Keener spoke at the big climate strike rally in West Dallas on September 20. Keener reports that around 2,000 joined in the effort to force governments to take action on global warming. Other activities continued in Dallas and worldwide through the week.
Educators Rally
Alliance/AFT members and supporters rallied outside a Dallas School Board meeting on September 26. They then packed into the meeting to demand fair pay rather than the biased compensation system being proposed.
Airline Caterers Send Thanks
The UNITE-HERE union sends the gratitude of their 20,000 airline catering workers for standing in solidarity during difficult contract negotiations. They write, “Your compassion, motivation, and determination helps us fight for a better standard in the industry…. One job should be enough!”
The battle continues.
Labor Against Cancer
The United Food and Commercial Workers union is sponsoring “Labor Against Cancer” evening events in Texas and Oklahoma. The Dallas event is October 26 at Trinity Groves. The Fort Worth event is November 10 at Trinity Park.
The movement provides an opportunity for all organized labor to do what they do best, empower their membership to band together for the good of others in the communities where they work and live.
