Labor Fights for Freedom
Governor Abbott’s July 8 special session of the legislature is expected to prioritize drastic anti-voter legislation. At least seven voter-curtailment bills have already been signed, but the big one, known as SB7, was thwarted by a walk-out in the last hour of the regular session.
Labor is fighting hard for our freedoms. The Texas AFL-CIO co-sponsored a mass demonstration at the capitol on June 20. The Communications Workers of America sponsored buses from at least five Texas cities, including Dallas. CWA Vice President Claude Cummings was a major speaker at the rally. On June 17, UNITE-HERE sponsored buses to New Orleans for a “Black Voters Matter” rally.
Activists from the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans attended and assisted labor’s actions and came up with some of their own. Organizer Judy Bryant is calling for retirees to demonstrate all over the state. Dallas retirees picketed at the Richardson office of Republican Representative Angie Chen Button on June 24. Button’s office door was locked, but Dallas Chapter President Kenneth Williams will lead another delegation on June 28 to ask Representative Button to stop voting to curtail our rights.
Also on June 24, the retirees held a statewide meeting on-line with James Slattery of the Texas Civil Rights Project. They have called another demonstration for 10AM on July 1 at Republican Rep. Morgan Meyer's office, 3131 McKinney Ave in Dallas. The fight for freedom goes on.
