Workers Have Too Many Opportunities!
The Dallas AFL-CIO Central Labor Council meeting at 7:30 on Thursday, March 17, will be choosing from way-too-many excellent opportunities.
Several working-families candidates are facing runoffs, and all of them want labor’s help. Incredibly important legislation is pending. Unions are planning organizing drives and contract negotiations that need a lot of solidarity.
Our best thinkers are needed. All members of affiliated unions are invited at 7:30PM to 1408 N Washington.
Teachers Are On the Move
Alliance/AFT, school employees union, is the biggest local union in Dallas. They are hiring an organizer because they intend to get bigger. Vice-President George Rangel says the starting salary range is $37,000-$40,000/year. The AFT organizes school workers from kindgergarten through graduate school. They just announced a merger with the American Association of University Professors. Some of those professors can be downright militant. Dr Michael Phillips was in the newspapers this week as the 3rd professor to sue Collin College over first amendment issues.
Since the West Virginia teachers taught the world a lesson in union solidarity a few years ago, education workers have been on the front lines. Currently, tens of thousands of Minneapolis public school employees are out on strike.
Important Dates Ahead
Save April 28 and May 1 on your calendar! May 1 is International Workers Day. Steelworkers under Brother Lou Luckhardt have already volunteered to take the logistics for a Dallas picnic at Lake Cliff Park, AKA Colorado Park, beginning at 2PM that Sunday afternoon. Unions, progressive organizations, and labor-endorsed candidates may be asked to pay $100 for a table, access to the microphone, and a listing in the brochure.
April 28 is Workers Memorial Day, when the nation honors all the workers killed or injured at work. It’s also the day that OPEIU 277 and UFCW 1000 are co-sponsoring a fund raising shooting match in Mingus, Texas.
