The Dallas AFL-CIO endorsements are on line.
The Texas Tribune projected arithmetic from voter turnout figures that came out on Wednesday. Given low voter registration rates and low turnout, they estimated, “On that day, a candidate could have won a Republican nomination with support from a measly 2.1% of voters; a Democrat would’ve needed just 1.5%.” In other words, each single vote counts far more than it would in a different election.
Texas AFL-CIO organizer Marilyn Davis says that she will celebrate the end of election day at 7:30PM on March 1 at the Garden Café, 5310 Junius. Labor-endorsed candidate Chris Leal will be watching election results with supporters there. Sign up here.
Labor will not celebrate nor rest for long. The Dallas AFL-CIO political committee will review the election results and make further plans at an on-line meeting Wednesday evening. We might rest after November!
Solidarity Victorious in Beaumont
Members of Steelworkers Local 13-243 will return to work at their Beaumont refinery on March 7, according to retiree leader Reverend Harmon Dent. Dent organized retiree support during the 9 ½ month lockout ordeal. North Texas labor made major contributions to the solidarity movement, especially in a Christmas effort that brought in thousands of dollars and gifts for the children.
