Agenda Is For Change
Texas labor is working hard for election change at every level. The entire updated Texas AFL-CIO COPE endorsement list, adjusted after the first round of the primary election, is posted at https://texasaflcio.org/news/2024-cope-endorsements. It includes the Dallas labor recommendations announced last week. https://texasaflcio.org/dallas/labors-election-work/updated-labor-endorsements
Texas Labor Wants Change
Texas labor leaders gathered in Austin on March 26 to review our present organization and discuss possible changes. Here are some of the problems that came up:
- Labor wins most elections in big cities, but loses elsewhere
- Some areas of Texas, especially rural counties, seem to have no AFL-CIO connections
- Statistics from 2023 showed new organizing, especially in Texas, but it did not overcome the nation’s long trend toward lower union density
- More staff is needed
- More training is needed
- More resources are needed
The Dallas AFL-CIO delegates are sure to have a rich discussion at our regular meeting on the third Thursday of April.
Election Fraud Discussion Is Changing
Contrasting court decisions on voter fraud were revealed in today’s news. A Texas appeals court overturned the illegal voting conviction of Crystal Mason. She mistakenly voted in Fort Worth in the 2016 election, but overeager politicians who wanted to prove “voter fraud” pushed for, and got, a five-year prison sentence against her. The appeals court said they proved no such thing. Meanwhile, a Georgia Republican official who pushed false claims that the 2020 election was “stolen” was found to have voted illegally nine times, a judge ruled this week. Texas Tribune revealed that Crystal Mason was innocent; Washington Post said that the Georgia Republican was guilty.
