Are We There Yet?

This week, when SAG-AFTRA cancelled a public action in Dallas and announced that negotiations had resumed, solidarity activists hoped for a good contract and an end to their long strike. When the Autoworkers announced an "historic contract" offer to be considered by their Ford workers, solidarity activists hoped that our friends in North Texas UAW Locals 276, 816, and 2360 would soon finish their picket duty.

New union updates may indeed give us reasons to celebrate, but this American labor upsurge is far from over. We aren't "there" yet. Many North Texas battles have already begun. The Southwest Airlines Pilots and the American Airlines Flight Attendants, for example, need good contracts. We're still organizing Starbucks. The Teamsters have vowed to organize mighty Amazon, which is owned by the second richest man on Earth. If the Autoworkers prevail in the present strikes, they will likely go after Tesla, which has a big workforce in Texas and is owned by the richest man.

Working families have to be protected from insidious politicians. We have to save our schools and win the elections in November. Solidarity activists have  made tremendous progress over the past year, but we’re not “there," and we won’t be "there" as long as one job lacks dignity and decent pay, while ignorance trumps enlightenment, while poverty exists, and while a single crooked politician remains in office!
