When North Texas working families win on November 8, AFL-CIO activists will deserve a lot of the credit. Dallas AFL-CIO is canvassing door-to-door every Saturday and phone banking every day . Instructions are on a Zoom call every Monday and Wednesday. Tarrant activists also canvass on Saturdays and phone bank every day. Contact jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com for Dallas or angi.defelippo@tcclc.org for Tarrant. Both counties are coordinated by Texas AFL-CIO. Contact  marilyn@texasaflcio.org.

The state federation is conducting its own statewide programs. Contact lorraine@texasaflcio.org. The Texas Alliance for Retired Americans is concentrating on older voters. Contact judy4tara@aol.com.

If you need motivation about labor’s importance in politics, consider that the National Labor Relations Board is moving to force Exxon/Mobile to pay $millions$ in back pay to the refinery workers they locked out last year in Beaumont. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has already ruled that the big oil company has to pay hundreds of thousands in damages to two scientific whistleblowers that they fired. The NLRB and OSHA listen to labor when our candidates are in office!

On the negative side, consider that the Trump-pumped Supreme Court is considering a case that would allow companies to sue striking workers for damages. They may also tear more holes in the Voting Rights Act by letting Alabama get away with under-representing their Black population.

Tarrant labor activists canvass for Jan McDowell 10/8/22

Critical retiree endorsements have recently been added to the AFL-CIO approvals of such progressive North Texans as Jan McDowell, Colin Allred, Marc Veasey, Elva Curl, Elizabeth Ginsberg, and Francine Ly.

Good News for Working Families

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 263,000 in September, and the unemployment rate edged down to 3.5 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rate for Hispanics decreased to 3.8 percent in September. The jobless rates for adult men (3.3 percent), adult women (3.1 percent), teenagers (11.4 percent), Whites (3.1 percent), Blacks (5.8 percent), and Asians (2.5 percent) showed little change over the month.

Celebrate Joe Hill

Labor’s martyr, songwriter Joe Hill, was born October 7, 1879 in Sweden. He was executed in 1915 in Utah. Some of his last words are forever etched in the hearts of those who care about working families, “Don’t mourn. Organize!”

Joe Hill, 1879-1915
