Retirees Are On Alert
According to the national Alliance for Retired Americans, the Republican congressional proposals would:
- Raise Medicare eligibility age to 67
- Voucherize Medicare
- Raise some Medicare premiums
- Gut Medicaid
- Cut Social Security
The Alliance has also received alarming news that a new effort is underway to repeal the national health care program and remove health care coverage from tens of millions of Americans!
Texas AFL-CIO Is Dedicated to Disaster Relief
The Texas AFL-CIO has announced the postponement of their major fund raiser, the Walter Umphries Golf Tournament, in order to continue raising funds for disaster relief for the Gulf Coast. North Texas unionists have already sent tens of thousands of dollars, but more is needed for the Texas Workers Relief Fund.
Oppose Transit Fare Increase
At the September 12 board meeting of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), the Dallas Chapter of the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans announced official opposition to the proposed fare increase. The North Texas Transit Riders report that all senior reduced fares would go up 20%. The regional reduced fare would increase 140%. Decreasing ridership because of the fare increase would make transportation less safe for seniors.
Spokespersons for the Transit Riders group will appear on the Workers Beat Program at KNON radio 89.3 FM at 9AM on Saturday, September 16.
