Dallas Labor Moves Forward
The Dallas AFL-CIO Central Labor Council meeting on September 20 was worth bragging about.
- Individual unions reported workplace gains.
- The labor movement as a whole is making historic advances.
- Plans are in motion that will advance organizing and pull the entire progressive movement forward.
The Amalgamated Transit Union has improved health care options for injured workers. The Decorators Union just agreed to their best contract in decades. The federal employees beat back some terrible anti-union moves from President Trump.
Federal workers’ unions are more active than anyone can remember. The postal employees have set a major fightback against privatization. The school employees are launching a major program to improve school finances. School employees are also leading a major effort to provide citizenship help for undocumented workers. Communications workers are leading several organizations in multiple efforts to register more voters and win the 2018 elections.
All of these efforts add up to irresistible selling points for union organizing!
Shall We Wear Red Together?
The Communications Workers of America, nationwide, wear red on Thursdays to symbolize unity. The Autoworkers do the same on Wednesdays. Why not pick a day for everybody in our area? The idea is being discussed in the AFL-CIO. A decision may be reached next month. Contact Gene Lantz at genelantz.dallasaflcio@gmail.com with your input.
Election Work Is Crucial
Dallas AFL-CIO’s next election effort is Tuesday, September 25, with phone banking at 6PM at 1408 N Washington. It is a national call-in day. Special refreshments will make it even more fun and interesting than usual. These efforts can make the difference in the upcoming mid-term elections. Low turnout is the main obstacle.
