Stand by for more action! The Dallas AFL-CIO meets at 7:30 Thursday, March 15, at 1408 N Washington. All affiliated union members and invited guests will analyze developments and make plans for labor's next moves.

Big Union Strike Wins!

The incredible victory of West Virginia school employee unions will be high on everyone's list. How did they manage to pull off a nine-day strike that shut down every school in the state? How did they win a freeze on new health care costs and a five percent raise for themselves and all state employees? What can we expect next?

AFL-CIO principal officer Mark York is reaching out to leaders in Oklahoma, one of the three states that have announced that they hope to emulate West Virginia's success. Union leaders there have issued an ultimatum which might lead to a statewide strike as early as April 2nd!

Steven Noble Smith, an organizer of the West Virginia strike, will explain some of their methods on the "Workers Beat" program on KNON radio 89.3 FM from 9 to 10 AM on Saturday, March 10.

Election Battles Continue

Dallas AFL-CIO activists and our friends will continue to work hard canvassing and phone banking for pro-worker candidates. Labor's endorsed candidates in the March 6 primary succeeded in getting into runoffs or winning outright at a 90% rate. We will set priorities and plan strategies at the Thursday night meeting. Turnout for labor's candidates was greatly improved over the last mid-term elections, but more improvement is necessary. Dallas AFL-CIO President George Rangel says that greater turnout continues to be our biggest challenge.

Three seats on the Dallas school board will be on the May 5 ballot. Two are uncontested so far, but incumbent Bernadette Nutall faces several challengers in East Dallas. Alliance/AFT leaders will likely have recommendations at the Thursday night meeting. In that school board race, early voting will begin on April 23.

Runoffs from the March 6 primary race are set for May 22. Early voting will begin May 14. As usual, labor's activists and all our supporters will be strong forces.
