Election Showdowns Coming

After Monday, December 8, we will know nearly all of the candidates for 2026. Union members everywhere are mobilizing for showdowns with the aspiring anti-union dictatorship. Fortunately for us in Texas, union members will be joined by very strong and capable youth and retiree organizations.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the Trump redistricting will be in effect. The new Texas maps open the possibility of electing 5 new Republican Congresspersons, but will also weaken some existing Republican districts.

Candidates in our area are beginning to apply for union endorsement. The process begins now and here. It will be completed at the Texas AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education conference in Georgetown January 24-25.

Locally, we already have two labor candidates for the special election January 31. Taylor Rehmet (pictured above with our Bonnie Mathias) is gathering a formidable army of volunteers and donors for the runoff in Senate District 9 in Tarrant County. Lou Luckhardt, outgoing principal officer of the Dallas Central Labor Council is just beginning his campaign for mayor of Ennis.

Lou Luckhardt is active with all of labor and all retirees

Respected labor leader Angi DeFilippo will oversee communications and politics for the labor movement.

Long Time Labor Allies Hold a Banquet

The Dallas Peace and Justice Center held its annual banquet on December 4. Peace activists were not the only ones honored, but also those in the forefront of fighting for other things that labor prioritizes, including environmental rights and immigrant rights. Our own DJ Garza of Workers Defense Project and UAW Local 2320, was with one of the groups honored for defending undocumented workers.

Emcee Lon Burnam announced a rally for “No War with Venezuela” for 3 PM Saturday, December 6, at Civic Garden Park, 1100 Commerce Street.

Grocery Workers Organize

December 5 is a big day for United Food and Commercial Workers who are organizing grocery stores. Our Young Active Labor Leaders are Backing them all the way. UFCW is holding union elections on 3 shifts 6-8AM, 3-5PM, and 9:30-11:30PM at these locations.

Our Comrades Need Help

All over the nation, people who are standing up for worker rights and justice are being hit hard by supporters of the Trump program. Among them are our federal workers and the 21 students and faculty who were arrested for protesting at University of Texas at Dallas.

Starbucks workers were pleased to hear that management will have to fork over $35 million to New York barristas over unfair labor practices, but the strike and boycott haven’t been won yet. Become part of their strategic plan.
