Fighting = Winning

Gene Lantz, Dallas President
Social share icons

Retiree activists need you at a public news conference for 11AM tomorrow, Saturday June 22, at the Social Security office, 10824 N Central Expy. Social Security is one of the REAL ISSUES facing Texans in 2024 because of threatening developments in the Republican-dominated House of Representatives and elsewhere. Proposals to cut benefits and/or raise the retirement age keep coming.

A series of public events on REAL ISSUES are planned and YOU are needed. Contact genelantz.dallasaflcio@gmail.com.

Political Committee Has a Plan

The June 20 meeting of the Dallas Central Labor Council welcomed its first talk from the new political leaders, Earnest Tilley and Hobie Hukill. They outlined an ambitious plan to win the especially critical elections this year. Hukill said that “Everyone should plan to do something on a weekly basis!” All activists are signing up at Bit.ly/DallasCLC?r=qr.

Let’s Keep Winning

Speakers at the June 20 Central Labor Council were especially upbeat. Leaders of the Workers Defense Project reported on their success in fighting SB4, the “show your papers” bill. The Texas Legislature passed SB4, but it is being challenged as unconstitutional. With help from Young Active Labor Leaders and others, Workers Defense pressured the Dallas City Council to condemn this reactionary legislation. They succeeded. Workers Defense is well known nationwide for their efforts on safety for Texas construction workers. They told the June Council meeting about new efforts. The Labor Council voted full support and a financial donation.

Ground Game Project reported on their success in gathering tens of thousands of signatures to allow Texans to vote on marijuana legalization. Council leaders congratulated them and voted support.

As usual, the report from our Young Active Labor Leaders drew the most applause. They reported that another North Texas Starbucks store had voted union. Co-Chair David Lowery said that North Texas has the highest density of successful Starbucks organizing drives in the nation. They also reported on their excellent efforts for Flight Attendants, Pride at Work, and strike support.

Campaign representatives from the Julie Johnson for Congress campaign and Elizabeth Ginsberg for State Representative spoke. Candidate Averie Bishop, candidate for State Representative, came in person and inspired the labor council.
