Five Celebrations!
Labor’s main celebration starts at 2PM tomorrow, May 4, at the Postal Employees (APWU) Hall, 2010 Postal Way. It is just north of the Bulk Mail Center at the Hampton exit on Highway 30, just on the western edge of downtown. We received late word that our striking Teamster speaker from Fort Worth cannot make it, but we still have the major labor leaders of Dallas plus a talent show and other fun activities. Rain will be no problem, because the APWU Hall is plenty big.
Remember when Dallas didn’t celebrate International Workers Day at all? This year, local political groups started it off on April 27 with a picnic in Lake Cliff Park. Next we had an Immigrants Rights action at City Hall early in the morning on May 1. The Dallas Chapter of Texas Alliance for Retired Americans (TARA) held their picnic at Kidd Springs Park at Noon, May 1. They were also kicking off Older Americans’ Month. On May 2, Young Active Labor Leaders joined TARA to speak to Lake Ray Hubbard Democrats in Rowlett.
We have a lot to celebrate: according to BLS statistics released on Tuesday, wages of private sector union members have risen 6.3% since March 2023. Meanwhile, our nonunion counterparts only saw a 4.1% bump in their salaries. People are joining! This comes after several months of high-profile strikes and organizing activity across industries, from coast to coast. There is more to come!
