Dallas AFL-CIO has added new affiliates and raised its membership during the past year. We have been more active than ever in anybody’s remembrance. The Council organized and carried out at least five major public actions under the leadership of Principal Officer Lou Luckhardt. In previous years, one public action, or even less than one, was the average! All of labor did ourselves especially proud as we mobilized strike assistance. Union power grew more in 2023 than any time since 1946!

Good Time to Organize

Historically, union organizing rises when the economy gets hot, and it’s hot now. Here are some new announcements:

  • CNN reports that 900,000 unionists won double-digit pay increases this year
  • The UAW won nearly $8 million in back pay for wronged General Motors employees
  • More than 1,000 auto workers at Volkswagen have signed union cards
  • Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett says that $2,000,000 is coming toward building fast passenger trains from here to Houston
  • The first grant for chip manufacturing, $35,000,000 has been granted. We expect federal grants here
  • Dallas will get $21,800,000 for road safety
  • The stock market index is at an all-time high
  • The Biden Administration announced that $37,000,000,000 is committed to benefit seniors and Americans with disabilities
  • The official unemployment rate remains below 4%, and the annual inflation rate dropped to 3.1%

“Real wages” (after inflation adjustment) are rising!

Real wages rise!

Unions have had measurable success in elections. For example, we supported John Whitmire for Mayor of Houston. Right after he won, he settled a years-long fight with the Fire Fighters so that they can negotiate a union deal! The money coming from federal projects comes with stipulations for fair wages, job safety, diversification, and unionization. We can do even better in 2024!
