Join the Union Movement!
As the outlook for working families grows more perilous, conversations are taking place everywhere about what to do. At our Mid-Cities retiree meeting on November 14, the consensus was that unions and union-related organizations are our best protection against autocracy.
Communications Workers and Coalition of Black Trade Unions leader Jerrell Miller agreed. Further, he said, “Unions cannot make it on their own.” We need to join other progressive organizations and take advantage of our high approval ratings with the general public. In Dallas, the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans and the Young Active Labor Leaders have been effective. Working America has not yet been important here, but it has vast potential because everybody in America can join.
Miller said that union density is already rising in 2024 and that more union organizing is needed. Union-related organizations also need recruitment drives.
The friendships that labor needs seldom come about by talking. We weld ourselves with others when we take action together. Right now, we have several opportunities:
- Pro-Ceasefire groups are protesting at 1PM Saturday, November 16, at the Anatole Hotel
- The Fired Black Dancers will hold a picket at noon on November 25
- The Dallas MLK march is set for January 18. Other organizations are also calling for national demonstrations that Saturday, two days before inauguration.
Members of all affiliated unions are invited to help strategize at our monthly Central Labor Council meeting at 7:30PM on November 21
