Jason Tomlinson reports that the Dallas picnic has at least 25 co-sponsors and more are still welcome. Contact him at jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com.

International Workers Day honors the Haymarket Martyrs of Chicago. They were the leaders of the worldwide 8-hour day movement in 1886. They were rounded up and hanged on fake murder charges. There are parades and picnics all over the world every May 1.

Celebrate Dolores Huerta

Gerardo Contreras reports that Second Street in downtown Grand Prairie will be renamed for Dolores Huerta on the morning of April 30 before the annual Cinco de Mayo parade. Contreras is a delegate to Dallas AFL-CIO from Autoworkers Local 848. He is prominent in nearly all North Texas labor activities and will be cooking for the May 1 picnic in Oak Cliff.

Dr. Huerta raised 11 children and a whole lot of cain during her 92 years. She has 15 honorary doctorates. She may be best known as co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America, but she is also a leading civil rights and feminist figure. A recent podcast tells more about this living labor icon.

Labor’s Work Continues

Dallas AFL-CIO will block-walk beginning at 9 AM on May 7th from the Alliance/AFT hall, 334 Centre in Dallas. Jason Tomlinson reports that he is also looking for phone bank volunteers. Contact him at  jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com. Retirees are working their phones from home under the direction of Judy Bryant (judy4tara@aol.com). We plan to win the May 24 runoff elections.
