Top Speakers Will Join Labor at May 1 Picnic

County Judge Clay Jenkins has agreed to be our keynote speaker on May 1. History professor Michael Phillips will explain why working families across the world celebrate International Workers Day.

Unions and progressive candidates will be featured at labor’s May 1 picnic, 2-6PM at Lake Cliff (Colorado) Park. Several have already pledged $100 and plan to set up tables and be listed in the brochure being prepared by Jason Tomlinson. Ads in the brochure are $500 for a full page, $250 for a half page.

Lou Luckhardt of the Steelworkers Union has already reserved the pavilion. It is on the west side of the park at 1100 Crawford, near the corner of Crawford and Zang Streets. Tangent to the pavilion is a circular walkway where tables can be set up. Free food, entertainment, union history, union organizing drives, and political speeches will make a fun day!

Alliance/AFT Defends Schools

The Dallas school employees’ union continued to stand up for workers, students, and our democratic communities on March 24. Wearing bright red shirts, they made their presence felt at the Dallas Independent School District Board meeting. Photos are on their Facebook Page.

Teacher Rosemary Curts, who is also a delegate to the Dallas AFL-CIO, writes, “On Thursday night, Alliance-AFT members and supporters advocated for reduced standardized testing, protections for marginalized student populations, and pay raises that keep up with inflation. We were also excited to connect with a group of school nurses that were advocating for their own raises and respect, after putting in an incredible number of work hours, dealing with extremely high pressure, and encountering very risky working conditions under the last two years of the COVID epidemic. Alliance-AFT will be continuing these campaigns in the coming months as DISD plans its budget for the following school year. Stay tuned for further action items!”

Across America, our right to public education is under attack. School boards are being pressured, budgets are being squeezed, parents and educators are being threatened, and books are disappearing from libraries. In Dallas, Alliance/AFT is the front line of resistance!
