We’ll be phone banking tonight, April 28, at 6:30PM from 1408 N Washington. Tomorrow at 9AM, our biggest Saturday mobilization for door-to-door canvassing will begin. Contact Jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com. The labor movement has implemented a rigorous screening process to select the best candidates in the election now underway. They are listed on our web site.

We must get our families and friends to vote. Here are the voting hours:

  • Apr 28: Until 5P
  • Apr 29: 8A-5P
  • Apr 30: Noon-6P
  • May 1-2: 7A-7P
  • May 6: 7A-7P

The Texas AFL-CIO is leading crucial lobbying efforts to rescue our democracy and make Texas a decent place to live and work. They are holding special educational and legislative trainings. Dozens of Texas activists attended the webinar with President Rick Levy and Representatives Victoria Neave, Mihaela Plesa, and Ron Reynolds on April 26. They lead a big lobbying effort in the state capitol every day!

Nationally, labor is working hard to get a decent Labor Secretary approved by Congress. Looming over everything is the Republicans’ threat to drastically cut government programs, which would work great hardships on Americans and increase the danger of recession, or to stop paying government debts, which would cause a worldwide economic meltdown.

Today, April 28, is Workers Memorial Day. Statistics indicate that workplace safety is worsening, especially for Black and Brown workers. Ed Sills of Texas AFL-CIO has published statistics for 2021:

  • 343 workers died each day from hazardous working conditions.
  • 5,190 workers were killed on the job in the United States.
  • An estimated 120,000 workers died from occupational diseases.
  • The job fatality rate increased to 3.6 per 100,000 workers.
  • Black and Latino death rates increased the most
