Labor Resists

The Trump government is advancing mighty attacks against working families, especially the most vulnerable, but labor is stiffening our resistance. The Dallas AFL-CIO contingent in the January 18 MLK march was a model of the progressive coalition we need. Organized labor was it’s core, but it was well surrounded by our strong allies.
UAW Local 848 member Gerardo Contreras pulled his beautifully decorated float. Aboard it were Texas Alliance for Retired Americans, Democratic Party activists, and U.S. Congresswoman Julie Johnson. Earnest Tilley’s truck advertised the Communications Workers of America, and Lou Luckhardt’s 12-passenger Steelworker van, showing our commitment to outreach, brought up the rear.
Marching on foot were activists from more unions, Democratic Socialists of America and our own labor shock troops, Young Active Labor Leaders. All of the participants displayed our commitment to the teachings of America’s greatest organizer, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.
Strengthen Labor's Political Arm
Candidates are registering for local elections. All of Dallas City Councilpersons and three school board trustees will be elected on May 3. The wisest candidates will be seeking labor's endorsement. Political Director Earnest Tilley, etilley2006@yahoo.org, is organizing volunteers.

Defend Immigrants
The main targets of racist attacks, so far, are our immigrant siblings. The MAGA Republican propaganda machine has had some success in dividing working families, but labor is standing strong for solidarity.
News reporters are warning that our workplaces, hospitals, and even our schools may be targeted. In fear, some immigrant families may be interrupting their children's education already. The effect on our public schools, already a MAGA Republican target, may be terrible. School districts and school employee unions are preparing.
Labor relies heavily on Workers Defense Project , whose employees are affiliated with Dallas AFL-CIO as part of the Auto Workers Union, for guidance. “Immigration Project,” (https://proyectoinmigrante.org/) is working with Dallas AFL-CIO on Citizenship Forums and has an on-line meeting scheduled for 2PM on January 28. The next big Citizenship Forum scheduled is Feb 8, 9A-3P, at the Electrician’s Hall, IBEW 20, in Grand Prairie.
Catholic Charities has offered help for decades in Dallas. Labor’s constituency group Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) has a “know your rights” toolkit on their web page. The President of Mexico has ordered all of their consulates to help.
Pledge to Help Starbucks Workers
Starbucks workers have a national campaign and ask for everyone’s help. The link is https://tinyurl.com/SBWUPledge and the hashtag is #NoContractNoCoffee. It is likely that they will be leafleting area stores all through February, and volunteers are always welcome.
Deadline for Scholarship Applications is January 31
The Texas AFL-CIO offers college scholarships to graduating children and grandchildren of affiliated union members. Rose Curts heads up the committee for Dallas. Contact her at quinnopolis@gmail.com.
