Starbucks Workers are Voting Now!
Starbucks workers at Mockingbird Station are voting on unionizing today, July 29. Young Active Labor Leaders (YALL) has a victory party at 4PM. Ed Sills of Texas AFL-CIO reported that a worker from that shop had been fired. He encouraged donations for Starbucks solidarity. The NLRB has now issued 13 major complaints consisting of over 470 allegations of employer misconduct by Starbucks, according to Sills.
The Mockingbird workers were brave enough to conduct a walkout during their organizing drive. Several videos are available on YouTube. Kate Cohen reported in the Washington Post that more than 300 Starbucks stores nationwide have petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to hold a representation election. In 201 of those stores — across 32 states — pro-union forces have won. Just over 40 have lost.
Dallas Labor Strategizes
Leading Dallas political activists gather with elections experts from the Texas AFL-CIO on Monday. Union planning differs from general planning by political parties and individual campaigns, especially because our aim is to strengthen the movement for working families as well as winning elections in the immediate sense. Workers contacting workers, especially face to face in workplaces, is far superior to other forms of “politicking.” Similarly, the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans will reach out to Texas retirees.
Activist training for Dallas is set for August 6. Please get involved by contacting Marilyn Davis at marilyn@texasaflcio.org or Jason Tomlinson at jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com.
Support Our Freedoms
National AFL-CIO, strongly supported by the state federation, is winding up a week of action to support America’s basic freedoms. In workplaces across the nation, workers spread the word about the fight. To bring the labor movement together in battle, they ask that everyone share and complete the 2022 AFL-CIO Survey.
Retirees Commit to Winning
Winning in November was the main business of the national Alliance for Retired Americans on-line convention on July 26-27. Top AFL-CIO leaders Liz Shuler and Fred Redmond were among the experts who spoke. Redmond said, “No one has been a better champion of retirement security than the Alliance for Retired Americans.” On issues beyond retirement, Redmond stated, “The ARA is a leader… in all of the issues affecting the American people!”
Texas organizer Judy Bryant reports that Texas had 3 times the average participation from all states. Texas retirees keep up a high level of activities and ask everyone, young or old, to participate. At 6PM tonight, July 29, they present an on-line discussion of “Hispanic Retiree Voters” with Linda Chavez Thompson, former Executive Secretary of the national AFL-CIO. Please register in advance.
Tomorrow morning, July 30, at 9AM, KNON will broadcast a special hour celebrating the anniversary of Medicare/Medicaid, 89.3FM and http://knon.org. On Wednesday, August 3, at 12:30PM, everyone is invited to the Dallas TARA chapter celebration of anniversaries of both Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid. Please register in advance. Top political figures have specifically been invited.
