Another Strike Victory

Education workers in Chicago have suspended their strike pending a democratic vote on a tentative contract that includes big pay raises and improvements for public schoolchildren. The proposal will allow them to make up five working days at full pay.

The union movement is a social movement. The Washington Post said, ”The Chicago strike was another test of efforts by teachers’ unions to use contract talks typically focused on salaries and benefits and force sweeping conversations about broader problems that affect schools in large, politically left-leaning cities, including affordable housing, added protections for immigrants and the size of classes.”  https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/chicago-teachers-ok-tentative-agreement-but-strike-goes-on/2019/10/30/4399d1e2-fb87-11e9-9e02-1d45cb3dfa8f_story.html

Although it is commonly referred to as the “Chicago Teachers Strike,” it actually involved all school employees. The American Federation of Teachers cooperated with the Service Employees International Union to lead the effort. Students, parents, and community organizations cooperated and solidarity far and wide, including in Dallas, rocked the continent!

Communications Workers Applauded

The American Prospect ran an article praising the CWA for its nationwide commitment to wearing red every Thursday and being ready to go on strike. The Dallas AFL-CIO voted to wear red on Thursdays in solidarity with all working families.

CWA members have warned that working families will be negatively affected by a new AT&T plan to buy back its own stock. The already-rich will profit from higher stock prices while jobs suffer. AT&T is based in Dallas.
