Make August Hotter!

The Texas AFL-CIO has announced that our redistricting fight has now gone national. August 16 is the new National Day of Action with participation across the nation. Texas’ biggest effort will be at the State Capitol at 11AM. Unions and our allies are making August hotter for autocrats and would-be dictators.

We Are Defending Many Fronts

There are many battlefronts against autocracy. The redistricting fight is near the top because fundamental democracy is involved, but a lot of other issues are critical.

Both Dallas and Fort Worth officials have announced that they are caving in to the autocrats and giving up all efforts to oppose such evils as racism, homophobia, male chauvinism, and ageism. Unemployment and prices are rising. Inequality continues as the main description for the U.S. and world economy. Unprecedented government union busting is rampant. This week, it became even more difficult to assess our conditions when Donald Trump fired the chief statistician for the Bureau of Labor Statistics – from which the world used to draw much of its information.

Labor Has the Good News

The nationwide coalition against autocracy, with organized labor leading, is taking form.

Dallas Central Labor Council Political Director Earnest Tilley has advised activists about a number of public events already, including two anti-redistricting rallies in our area. Our Principal Officer, Lou Luckhardt encourages everyone to go to nearby Ennis for a rally at 11AM Tuesday, August 12, at 200 W Main. Contact him at lluckhardt.dallasaflco@gmail.comfor transportation help.

Two DFW constituency groups allow everybody to join, even if they currently have no union. This week, the Young Active Labor Leaders (YALL) flexed their muscles at a “sip in” celebration at the latest Starbucks store to schedule a union election. They are working on a giant statewide youth summit for September 5-7 at the Dallas Convention Center. Contact cantwelltravis22@hotmail.com.

The Texas Alliance for Retired Americans has announced more actions in the coming week than can be easily listed. See their web site for the ten actions scheduled so far.

Possibly the hottest August day comes at 9:30 AM on August 14, the 90th anniversary of Social Security. Join retirees at 2530 S. Malcolm X.  Their August 6th meeting in Dallas with Marc Veasey and Colin Allred set a high standard for activities. Contact judy4tara@gmail.com.
