The Dallas AFL-CIO, the very center of the progressive movement, will discuss strategies and make plans beginning at 7:30PM Thursday, June 20, at 1408 N Washington. All the members of all the affiliated unions are invited.
Trends will be analyzed. Scheduled activities will be promoted. Further work will be generated.
Texas Leaders Gather
Unionists are spending very little time looking back as they plan to storm ahead. The election update meeting sponsored by the Lone Star Project on June 19 took note of the improved outlook for Texas labor that came from election victories in 2018, but they put a lot more emphasis on the challenge of 2020.
Texas AFL-CIO President Rick Levy and State Senator Beverly Powell of Fort Worth congratulated union activists because the 2019 Texas Legislature was head and shoulders better than the others since Republicans took over the majority. North Texas AFL-CIO leaders Mark York and Bryan Golden talked almost exclusively about plans for more victories in 2020. All of the speakers, and all the comments from the floor, were upbeat!
It was a good beginning for the broader discussion that will take place at the Texas AFL-CIO convention in San Antonio July 25-27.
VA Employees Will Protest
The American Federation of Government Employees is mobilizing its members against a contract proposal from the Trump Administration that aims to cripple their union. The first Texas protest is scheduled for noon on June 26 outside the front gate of the Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 4800 Memorial Drive, in Waco.
