Many Fronts in War
The Dallas AFL-CIO Central Labor Council met on the third Thursday, October 19, as usual. We were pleased to have top officers from American Federation of Government Employees Local 1040 join us. Both the Executive Board and Delegates’ Meetings went smoothly and ended on time.
Check Out Our List of Activities
The list of upcoming activities below shows that working families have more challenges and opportunities than at any time in recent history. We are combatting those challenges and moving ahead with the opportunities.
Labor’s solidarity cookout, 3-7PM Saturday October 21 at 1408 N Dallas, is drawing attention from commercial newspersons. We will honor striking workers and make plans with the many individuals and organizations in the growing support movement. Starbucks organizing grows. Strikers from the actor’s union, SAG-AFTRA, invite everyone to a BIG public action on October 26.
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 540 is paying for turkeys from Kroger for all the striking workers from UAW 2360. Other unions are exploring ways to help the strikers win. Tarrant County AFL-CIO has a special donation site. Texas Organization Project and Young Active Labor Leaders are responding to a call from striking Auto Workers to carry out actions at local car dealerships. Texas Alliance for Retired Americans is buying cold-weather gear for picketers. Individuals and organizations continue to visit the picket lines at 301 Freedom Drive in Roanoke and 2205 E Beltline Road in Carrollton to show solidarity and find out what else we can do.
The political front is also ablaze. Progressive Texans are mobilizing to save our public schools. We’re struggling to end persecution of women and minorities. We’re urging voter turnout, especially for the three ballot propositions most affecting working families.
The good news, the best news, is that the Dallas AFL-CIO is hardly alone. More and more individuals and organizations are coming together in battle. Our Speakers Bureau is getting responses from churches, political organizations, and schools. The words of the poet ring true:
Rise Like Lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number -
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you-
Ye are many-they are few
--Percy Bysshe Shelley
