The labor movement gets stronger with every new connection. Dallas will be welcoming new affiliated members from the Bakers & Confectioners Union at our July 20 meeting. We’re reaching out to the new union, The Newsguild-CWA, journalists at the Dallas Morning News, in hopes that they, too, will affiliate.

Solidarity Binds Us Together

Teamsters and UPS head for a confrontation

As the nation braces for the biggest labor/management confrontation, Dallas AFL-CIO has reached out to Teamsters Local 767, the UPS local. We mailed a letter that says, “We stand in solidarity with your UPS fight and are looking for ways to help. Whenever you need us to help gather our Dallas forces, just contact us and we’ll be there.” In consideration that the local union is very busy, solidarity messages by U.S. mail are probably the best way for organizations to show support. Letters can go to Teamsters Local 767, 6109 Anglin Drive, Forest Hills TX 76119. Individuals can sign up for solidarity on their national website. http://teamsters.com.

Rosie Curts of the Young Active Labor Leaders continues to lead solidarity actions with Starbucks workers.

Make Political Connections

Congresswoman Crockett with TARA activists

CWA Local 6215 leader Earnest Tilley organized a “meet and greet” with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett at 1408 N Washington on July 5. Active and retired labor supporters gathered to discuss national legislation. The first two weeks in August will be opportunities to visit with other congresspersons during their next recess. The congressional calendar is on-line.

Talk Directly To Our Allies

Labor is the core, but is not alone in the fight for progress. Our activists are seeking ways to send live speakers to community organizations, unions, schools and churches. National AFL-CIO is helping us with church opportunities through their “Labor in the Pulpit” program. At least one North Texas congregation is currently choosing their speaker from those listed on our website.

Activists sharpened their public speaking skills at the weekly on-line “Labor Workshop” at 5 PM on Sunday, July 2. The July 9 session will take up “Labor Communications.” Register here. Those who wish to study in advance may watch an 8-minute overview on YouTube.

Unite on Labor Day

Unions and our allies will unite in full strength at our Labor Day Breakfast in the Longhorn Ballroom. Contact jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com for sponsorships and tickets now!
