Protests Unprecedented

You can’t tell about the weather, but you can count on Lou Luckhardt, principal officer of the Dallas labor movement. Rain may dampen the International Women’s Day march that begins at 2PM tomorrow, Saturday the 8th, at 1100 Commerce in downtown Dallas, but Lou says, “I’ll be there, one way or the other.” He’s also dug up over 100 ponchos to give away if wetness occurs.
Labor’s main speaker for Women’s Day will be Rose Curts. She’s also someone to be relied on. She didn’t let a massive dog bite stop her from registering voters door-to-door an election or two ago, so she’s not likely to cringe before a little precipitation.

Dallas is experiencing an unprecedented upsurge in protests, even on weekdays. At least 150 gathered in Dealey Plaza on Tuesday afternoon, and there were two on Thursday evening in Civic Garden, the same place where we’ll step off our International Women’s Day march.
Candidate Screening Nearly Done
The intense process of screening candidates on behalf of working families is nearly done. The Dallas AFL-CIO Political Committee will bring its recommendations to the third-Thursday meeting. Voters will be able to see the results on our web site.Already on the site is the list of congressional phone numbers that Political Director Earnest Tilley prepared for the many lobbying efforts underway.
The end of the screening and endorsing are only a signal that the real work is beginning. Contact Earnest Tilley at etilley2006@yahoo.com and get involved in labor's electoral work.
Economic Basis for Organizing Still Looks Good
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a decent 151,000 jobs created last month. The unemployment rate remains stable at 4.1% and wages are rising at a 4% annual level. So far, ten thousand federal workers are listed as laid off, but the courts have restrained the chainsaw murder of the economy and jobs market so far.
