Solidarity Burns!

2023 may be more than the hottest year in human history. It may also become the hottest year for worker uprisings since 1946!

This week, the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Actors (SAG-AFTRA) joined the Writers Guild of America (WGA) on picket lines across the nation. Street actions are especially big in Las Angeles, where they are also joined by hotel workers from UNITE-Here.

Locally, Teamsters Local 767 from Forest Hill did a big practice strike in Dallas on July 12. A coalition of airport workers has recently held two major rallies at DFW. Starbucks workers need organizing help.

Please join the Dallas AFL-CIO Solidarity Brigade.

The Solidarity Situation is New

In the past, the intermittent calls for solidarity were covered by outstanding individuals like Rosie Curts of Dallas and Tevita Uhutafe of Fort Worth. But today, our solidarity efforts need coordinating.

Please join the Dallas AFL-CIO Solidarity Brigade.

Individuals and groups, some of whom may have absolutely wonderful solidarity ideas, should be cautioned that taking action without the approval of the union involved may do more harm than good. Striking workers have put their lives on the line, and they deserve to call the shots! Also, those unions are buzzing with activity and may not appreciate uninvited visitors or phone calls.

Please join the Dallas AFL-CIO Solidarity Brigade.

To get involved immediately, contact the unions through their web pages and send letters of solidarity by U.S. Mail. Dallas AFL-CIO and others have already begun sending letters to Teamsters Local 767 at 6109 Anglin Dr, Forest Hill, TX 76119. Individuals can sign up at http://teamsters.org. The Writers Guild is at https://www.wga.org/ with local offices at 5000 Quorum Drive#700, Dallas, 75254.

Union members affiliated with the Dallas AFL-CIO will get updates at our regular 3rd Thursday Central Labor Council meeting at 7:30PM July 20 at 1408 N Washington. We are planning our major solidarity event of the year on Labor Day. Tickets and sponsorships are already being sold. Contactjtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com.

Good leadership gets better

Dynamic leader Claude Cummings

Texas’ own Claude Cummings has been elected International President of the Communications Workers of America. During his terms as leader of our district, he initiated outstanding solidarity work for labor. Additionally, as a leader of the national NAACP, Cummings brought labor and civil rights together into a solid solidarity fighting machine.
