All North Texans have an opportunity to publicly stand with the federal employees who are being laid off, unpaid, and threatened with firing. Justin Chen, President of the 8000-member AFGE Council 238, will be joined by other union leaders and a long list of political leaders involved in the life-or-death struggle over the government shutdown. Congressman Marc Veasey has already committed to come and many others will be represented before newspersons, according to Dallas AFL-CIO leader Lou Luckhardt.

Donald Trump is threatening firing and illegally withholding pay from the federal employees. Like most federal agencies, AFGE Council 238 members are responsible for restraining mighty corporations from risking our lives and fortunes. They run the Environmental Protection Agency during a time when global warming threatens us with extinction, but Trump furloughed them all today, October 9.

Labor's Candidate Needs You

Texas AFL-CIO endorsed candidate  (and union member) Taylor Rehmet has set up his web site and is accepting donations and volunteers for door-to-door canvassing and phone banking. The candidate and the labor movement agree that Senate District 9 is winnable this October. See https://www.taylorfortx.com/events

“Fight, Fight, Fight” Says Congresswoman

Congresswoman Julie Johnson, who will be represented at tomorrow’s news conference, held a “Labor Talk” at the CWA union hall on October 6th. She was asked about the calls and e-mails she is receiving on the shutdown. “It's fight, fight, fight!” she responded. She estimated that 98% of those who contacted her wanted the Democrats in Congress to continue to fight for health care, even if the shutdown goes on.

Other topics included demanding that the Trump Administration stop persecuting federal employers, stopping the war in the Middle East, and advocating for single-payer health care. Several union members and retirees participated, but the majority came from our Young Active Labor Leaders.
