“Twin bills aimed at curbing a quarter of Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s tax revenues have failed to meet key deadlines in the Texas Legislature and are unlikely to move forward this session.” –Dallas Morning News, May 30, 2025

The fight for mass transit is a civil rights and a union fight. Dallas AFL-CIO Principal Officer Lou Luckhardt is only one of the many union members and supporters who went to Austin as part of this battle. Young people have played an important part.

One name that has come up many times in mass transit struggles is Brinda Gurumoorthy. She is a Young Active Labor Leader, a Co-Chair of Democratic Socialists of America, a Dallas teacher and an enthusiastic member of the American Federation of Teachers. On May 29, she and other youth activists did a “banner drop” over the Woodall-Rogers freeway in support of train travel.

More Victories

The Texas AFL-CIO reports some victories in the current state legislature. They helped get important pro-worker legislation passed and they helped kill a number of anti-worker bills. They are also throwing themselves into organizing the fight to save the federal government employees. On May 29, their efforts yielded 500 phone calls with participation from all over the state, including four from Dallas.

Attend your union and AFL-CIO meetings in June to get important reports on legislative efforts. We also expect to find out about the convention of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists. The CBTU will not concede one inch to Musk/Trump! In solidarity with federal workers, Rev. Terrence L. Melvin, CBTU President said, “Many of us, including our veterans, have lost vital services while others have lost their jobs. There is a full-on assault against working people.”

Keep up the fight

Solidarity with the federal unions brings labor face-to-face against the entire Musk/Trump anti-worker agenda. Texas AFL-CIO will continue phone banking and other efforts. Contact Ana@texasaflcio.org. Get on the list for regular updates on Texas politics from tara@texasaflcio.org.
