Tomorrow Is a Good Day, Rain or Shine!

Rain won’t stop us from having a great time at labor's picnic tomorrow, Saturday, at 1PM at the APWU hall, 2010 Postal Way in West Dallas. We’ll have free food, music, and a talent show with a big cash prize. We delayed our celebration of International Workers Day until after the first round of local elections. It’s easy to get there if you take the Hampton exit from Highway 30 but DO NOT turn on Hampton.

Letter Carriers Carry Food

The biggest food drive in America takes place Saturday, May 13. Leave non-perishable foods near your mailbox so that members of the Letter Carriers’ Union (NALC) can pick them up. The special nutritional help that people received during the pandemic has ended; consequently, the need is greater than ever! You may need plastic bags to protect from rain.

Consider Working Mothers

During Mothers’ Day, let’s remember the fight for equal pay and decent treatment that is an integral part of our labor movement. Let us all stand together against the politicians that harm and viciously and publicly demean women!

We’re Winning!

Dallas labor’s election results are listed on our web site. Our endorsed candidates won 10 races, lost 1, and have a runoff in Dallas City Council District 3. Our candidate is Joe Tave. Election day is June 10, but the county elections officers have not yet posted early vote times.

Voter turnout in the first round was only 8.8%, and it will likely be even lower in the runoff; consequently, every labor vote will mean more than ever. Be sure to join our effort by contacting jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com.

Die, Monster, Die!

1965 horror movie starring Boris Karloff

In theory, a lot of legislation proposed in the Texas legislature is supposed to expire as of midnight, May 12. The bills, good and bad, that haven’t made it out of committee are not supposed to be considered further, but nothing is sure when it comes to the Texas legislature and the Governor. Labor will not lament many of the bills that were too horrible to discuss.

The Texas American Federation of Teachers has led Texas school employees, parents, and students in a glorious fight to prevent fanatics and their store bought politicians from enacted major voucher legislation. As of yesterday, we were winning, but it's not over until it’s over.

All of us are being hit from all sides by organizations wanting us to join desperate lobbying efforts. When choosing among them, remember to build the progressive movement with solid labor at its core.
