War Is Evident

The war against working families has been made visible. It was largely invisible until we joined together and fought back. Battle lines are now clear.

  • Despite popular opposition, the Texas Senate has voted to undermine public education with vouchers. Fight moves to House.
  • Studio bosses walked out on negotiations with striking actors in SAG-AFTRA
  • 75,000 health care workers held a 3-day strike, threatened another one, and got a tentative contract
  • Writers ratified their contract overwhelmingly
  • Canadian Auto Workers walked out one day and got a tentative contract the next
  • Mack Truck workers walked out
  • 8,700 Ford workers walked out of their factory in Kentucky
  • SAG-AFTRA, UAW 816, and UAW 2360 are still on strike in North Texas
  • No new UAW strikes were announced on the morning of October 13, but could be announced any day

We Fight Back

Solidarity activists continue to work with UAW 816's picketers at 301 Freedom Drive in Roanoke, UAW 2360 at 2205 E Beltline in Carrollton, and SAG-AFTRA and Starbucks whenever actions are called. SAG-AFTRA, UAW, and solidarity leaders held a statewide webinar on October 10 to discuss how to win strikes. Dozens of activists are helping spread the word on social media platforms. UAW 848 activists will go to the Carrollton picket line at 4PM on October 15. A special cookout honoring the strikers takes place at 3PM October 21 at 1408 N Washington. Every solidarity activist and organization seeks information on how to help our side win, and we respond to every need.

Both Tarrant and Dallas Central Labor Councils are working to win. Tarrant has a special site at https://tcclc.square.site  to take dollar donations and to find out individuals with special needs.

North Texans went to Austin to "Save Our Schools"

At least three North Texas rallies against school vouchers have taken place since Lou Luckhardt and other North Texans attended the statewide "Save our Schools" rally in Austin on October 7. They were in Richardson, Oak Lawn, and West Dallas. Labor activists, especially our youngest and oldest members, attend every one.

We posted video instructions on what to do if the big Arlington General Motors plant is called out. Young Active Labor Leadership is looking into an outreach program suggested by the Auto Workers. The Texas Federation of Teachers is asking people to sign up to serve as substitute teachers while their members lobby in Austin. Texas seniors are working to getting a "Yes" vote on Proposition 9 concerning pension increases.

The next government shutdown crisis will probably take place November 15. The underlying cause is that Republicans are demanding deep cuts in programs for working families while continuing to give away money to the rich. We need to make the political divide clear with public actions for “No Cuts!”
