Who Cares?

Labor cares.

We stand together against the strangling of American democracy and in favor of voting rights. Please attend our Early Voting rally at 10AM Monday, February 14, at 600 Commerce in downtown Dallas. The main battle for freedom will be measured in voter turnout.

Seniors and other eligible voters can still get their applications to vote by mail. They must be received at county election offices by February 18. Many retirees have already been approved, have received their ballots, and are only waiting for final labor endorsements to vote.

It’s Civil Rights Month

February 11 is celebrated around the world as Nelson Mandela day. Worldwide actions helped free him from prison on this day in 1990. Dallas labor had a part in that important movement. Our solidarity group, Jobs with Justice, sold “Free Mandela” buttons at every meeting. Many unionists helped picket Shell stations on Mandela’s behalf. One entire monthly APWU meeting turned out to picket a Shell station in Oak Cliff. It worked!

This year, labor has intensified Black History celebrations. Our own Facebook pages has a number of important posts, including 3 video interviews with local historians. Dr. Michael Phillips, who has a major free speech case after being laid off from Collin College, speaks out from the Dallas AFL-CIO page.

State Federation AFL-CIO Helps

The Texas AFL-CIO is solidarity personified. Their web site features important labor efforts that need help. This month, they began offering graphics and special resources to help unions and other progressives spread the word. Their regular e-news, available free from ed@texasaflcio.org, is the best progressive news source in the state.
