Mighty Amazon management lost to an independent union at a New York warehouse. Bloomberg Technology reports: “With only a few hundred ballots left to count, the Amazon Labor Union led with 2,300 yes votes versus 1,855 no votes for Amazon.” Credit for the win goes to organizer Christian Smalls, who fought back after being fired. He has two more Amazon warehouses in his immediate plans.
Meanwhile, workers at an Amazon warehouse in Alabama are holding their breath while challenge ballots are counted. Whether they end up winning or not, they know that they came far closer than they did earlier when they were bucking illegal interference from management.
North Texas labor participated in public activities that took place at airports nationwide. Workers demanded that American Airlines sign a “Good Jobs in the Airline Industry” pledge. The effort was led by the Service Employees (SEIU) and Workers United. Among the many who participated was Rick Levy, state AFL-CIO President.
News from the past week showed big organizing and contract gains at Southwest Airlines, Minneapolis schools, Google, Kellogg Cereals, and Conde Nast luxury magazines.
Texas Labor Makes New Endorsements
The Dallas AFL-CIO web page has been updated to include the new Texas AFL-CIO endorsements for the May 24 primary runoff. Joe Jaworski for Attorney General, Gilberto Hinojosa for Democratic Party Chair, and Lee Forbes for Democratic Party Secretary are among the new endorsements. Our next election is May 7.
The Texas Alliance for Retired Americans is urging seniors and other eligible voters to register to vote by mail. They want seniors to fight back rather than being discouraged by news that 23,000 voters, including Texas icon Willie Nelson, lost some of their voting rights March 1. Retirees argue that the best way to fight all forms of voter suppression is to vote by mail. The May 7 election will include two propositions that will lower property taxes for seniors. One Dallas School Board election will be on the ballot. Our school employees union, Alliance/AFT, has taken no position so far.
Endorsed candidates will be speaking and answering questions at our May 1 afternoon picnic in Lake Cliff Park.
