“The Working Class is the Arsenal of Democracy” –UAW
In the past week, 6 members of the Supreme Court stopped nibbling at the corners of democracy and started chomping. The biggest chomp was aimed at protecting Donald Trump from further criminal prosecution, but went much further. In her dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said that the ruling goes so far as to enable a president to order the military to assassinate a political rival!
Earlier, the court crippled all of the government’s regulatory agencies. All of them. Basically, the agencies’ role is to regulate corporations and restrain them from applying their basic nature to destroy all workers’ rights. They robbed the elected leaders of the Executive Branch of government and shifted decisions to the appointed Judiciary, in other words, to themselves!
An op-ed in the July 5 Dallas newspaper says, “A week ago, the Supreme Court dismissed the idea that a Jan. 6 rioter could be charged with obstructing an official proceeding… Political violence has skyrocketed in the U.S. in recent years.”
The decisions of the Supreme Court are final and almost impossible to change through normal channels. Working people are summoned to organize and fight!
Labor Has the Answer: Organize!
Communications Workers of America International President Claude Cummings sent out his Independence Day message: “This year Independence Day has a heaviness to it. The system of government that our nation’s founders put in place was meant to ensure that no one is above the law, yet a majority on the Supreme Court has turned that on its head, giving one person - the President - a literal “get out of jail free” card for even the most serious violations of our laws and our Constitution.
‘That would be dangerous in any circumstance, but it is a grievous threat in the hands of Donald Trump, who has shown complete disregard for the law throughout his business and political careers and has repeatedly said that he intends to use the military as a domestic police force and the federal government as a tool for a campaign of retribution against his perceived enemies….
‘Your vote and the votes of your co-workers, your family members, and your friends are powerful, and they have been paid for in blood. I, along with thousands of CWA members and retirees, will be doing everything we can between now and election day to turn out the vote to continue the progress we have made with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and to elect pro-worker candidates for the U.S. House and Senate.
‘Independence Day wasn’t an end. It was the beginning of a struggle over the meaning of equality and the cost of freedom. Let’s recommit ourselves to struggle together for a brighter future.”
Jobs Report Is Still Upbeat
Despite low predictions published just prior to the July 5 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in America continue to look good. There were 206,000 new jobs created in June. Average hourly earnings increased by 3.9% over the past year, more than inflation. Overall unemployment remains historically low at 4.1%, but the disgraceful unemployment rate for Black Americans, 6.1%, continues to embarrass us.
