Youth Takes the Lead!
During the Dallas AFL-CIO's most recent strategic planning session, there were concerns that younger members might be sidelined. We needn't have worried!
The Central Labor Council meeting on November 16 included a dozen or more young activists. The co-chairs of the Young Active Labor Leaders (DFW) were applauded several times for leading the labor movement in solidarity and organizing. Co-Chair David Fowler has established an association of technical workers. Co-Chair Rosie Curts announced the ninth organizing victory at Starbucks and a highly successful solidarity effort that same morning. Curts carries labor's message to Plano Unitarians this Sunday. It will be her fifth public speech on behalf of labor since August. Vice President Bonnie Mathias read a section of the national magazine Readers' Digest that features Curts!
Justin Kim had an outstanding anti-voucher essay published in his college newspaper.
Britni Cuington, another YALL member and Communications Workers dynamo, has been successful in getting the federal dollars for broadband extension headed in the right direction. She has taken on the job of Community Liaison and will be making sure that all organizing leads are followed up. The federation will facilitate organizing among our affiliated unions and constituency groups. Anyone who knows someone who wants to join a union should contact Britni at britni.cuington@gmail.com. America is bracing for a crescendo of union organizing, and we will help!
YALL members expect to participate in candidate screening and endorsement process that must be completed by January 19. Four important candidates addressed the November 16 Council meeting.
Dallas AFL-CIO's Christmas and Casino Party will give everyone a chance to meet candidates, veteran unionists, and our dynamic young labor leaders.
