The Texas AFL-CIO, the leading voice for working families in Texas, is seeking to hire a Strategic Communications Specialist. A new position, the Strategic Communications Specialist would proactively develop communication strategies to support the political, legislative, and organizing campaigns of the Federation, as well as to communicate the core values and positions of the labor movement to the general public. The successful applicant will have a unique opportunity to play a key role in helping to build and shape a bigger, broader, bolder, and rising labor movement in the state of Texas.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Director of Politics and Policy and the Communications Director to develop and execute strategic communications plans to support organizing, legislative, political, contract, and member mobilization campaigns.
  • Elevate the profile of the Texas AFL-CIO and the labor movement in Texas through strategic communications.
  • Use website, email, online actions, social media, and video to drive engagement of our members and the public in campaigns.
  • Work with Director of Politics and Policy and the Communications Director to develop and distribute a range of written communications – press releases, media advisories, op-eds, email blasts, social media posts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and other online platforms, campaign literature, talking points, blog posts, and content for the Federation’s website.
  • Identify media opportunities and conduct press outreach ahead of press conferences, rallies, hearings, and other mass mobilization events, and respond to incoming media requests.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of visibility events such as protests, rallies, speeches, etc.
  • Uplift the voices of our members and affiliates.
  • Support Local Central Bodies and affiliates with their communications programs.
  • Support the Communications Director in managing rapid response and crisis communications.
  • Evaluate the Federation’s online reach and track digital engagement metrics.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
While we recognize that applicants may not meet all of these criteria, the following are the most important qualifications:

  • We're seeking candidates who write well, and who will contribute to and run strategic media campaigns, and are deeply committed to the goals and values of the labor movement.
  • Prior experience and/or working knowledge of the labor movement, including principles of union organizing and collective bargaining.
  • Demonstrated work leading external communications and media outreach for labor, political, and/or progressive issue-advocacy campaigns in Texas.
  • Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively.
  • Ability to quickly synthesize and distill complex information into concise, impactful public messaging.
  • Experience using research metrics and/or databases to develop communications targets and messages is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to design campaigns and convey public messaging via social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, as well as more emerging platforms.
  • Proficiency with Action Network or similar platforms, and experience managing mass email programs.
  • Familiarity with posting website content, as well as website design and maintenance.
  • Ability to develop relationships with the working press.
  • Bilingual (written and verbal) English/Spanish candidates preferred.
     

The position is based in Austin but will require occasional travel. We have a vibrant, supportive workplace that is attentive to the needs of those who work here, however, willingness to, at times, work long, irregular hours and some weekends is important.

This is a full-time, exempt position represented by OPEIU Local 277. It carries a competitive salary and includes full family medical, dental, and vision benefits as well as a generous pension plan. The position is based in the headquarters of the Texas AFL-CIO in Austin, Texas.
