All We Need is Turnout!
If we want something different, we have to do something different. Our state AFL-CIO federation president, Rick Levy, often says, “Texas is not a ‘red’ state. It’s a non-voting state!” He also says, “Change Texas, change the world!” All we need is voter turnout.
When early voting began on Tuesday, we were downtown making as much hoopla as we could. Two labor-endorsed candidates, Francine Ly in CD24 and Yasmin Simon in Texas 108, joined a crowd that was mostly from CWA but included APWU and our retiree supporters. A surprising number of cars and trucks honked their encouragement. Look on our facebook page for photos, a video, and a 10-minute podcast with interviews by participants.
Labor’s endorsed candidates are listed on our web site. The Texas Alliance for Retired Americans independently endorsed Nathan Johnson in SD16, Yasmin Simon in Texas 108, and Averie Bishop in Texas 112.
Labor’s endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate, Colin Allred, has already begun launching his canvassing program from 1408 N Washington. Retirees are working with organizer Judy Bryant, judy4tara@aol.com, and the Texas AFL-CIO to phone bank other retirees. Contact political director Jason at jtomlinson.dallasaflcio@gmail.com to see how you can help. If we get out the vote, we win!
Women Matter
Labor-endorsed female candidates will be honored at 2 PM on March 9 at 1408 N Washington. Women’s Committee leader Robin Johnson has named the occasion “Women Rising!” If there is anything to be learned from vote totals in recent elections around the country, it is that women’s issues are paramount in 2024.
