The Rio Grande Valley Central Labor Council has entered a new leadership term with a clear focus on raising expectations, strengthening internal standards, and building a labor movement as expansive and powerful as the Valley itself.

Since January, the Council has taken deliberate and decisive steps to strengthen its foundation and bring its operations into closer alignment with AFL-CIO governance standards. This has included the adoption of comprehensive governing appendices, the implementation of consistent and enforceable meeting procedures, and the establishment of a strategic direction centered on accountability, transparency, and long-term organizational growth.

These actions are not isolated updates, but part of a broader effort to ensure that the Council operates with clarity, consistency, and purpose. Strong governance is essential to building trust, supporting affiliates, and ensuring that the Council is equipped to meet both its responsibilities and its potential.

This work also reflects a shift in expectations. The Council is not operating as a passive or symbolic body, but as an active, coordinated force aligned with the broader labor movement. The expectation moving forward is clear: meaningful engagement from affiliates, adherence to established standards, and a shared commitment to building collective power across the Rio Grande Valley.

At a time when working people across our region face increasing challenges, the role of the Council must be clear and consequential. The Rio Grande Valley deserves a labor movement that matches its size, strength, and potential—and that work requires intention, structure, and sustained action.

This is the standard being set. The work is underway, and it will continue to build in the months ahead.
