What About Texas?
Kenneth Williams flies home from the Chicago convention tomorrow, Saturday, August 24. On Sunday at 2PM, he will lead an on-line discussion about what the Democratic Party convention means for Texas and what we need to do about it. Everybody who went to the convention or has plans for the 2024 elections is invited. Williams is a longtime voluntary leader of Dallas Democrats and of the Dallas Chapter of Texas Alliance for Retired Americans. Register by clicking here.
It doesn’t mean much to be excited about the election unless we take Sister Michele Obama’s advice: “Do Something.”
Get Ready To Win Every Battle
Time is short for reserving seats and tables at the Dallas Labor Day Breakfast. It’s not just a celebration and a review of our successes over the past year. It’s also an opportunity to gain perspective on all the many struggles that make up what we call the labor movement. For many, it’s the launch pad for electoral programs. For others, it’s about organizing or winning our rights in the workplace.
Some of the battle lines are clear. We must win the 2024 elections, without doubt. We need to win contract fights like the big strike of 17,000 Communications Workers members in the Southeast. We need to back the Canadian railroad workers who were locked out and then forced into arbitration. We need to organize more low-wage workers like those at Starbucks. We need to stand up on environmental issues like mass transit. We need to reach out and expand our support base with organizations like Young Active Labor Leaders, Texas Alliance for Retired Americans, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, and Pride at Work. We need to reverse the trend in the federal judiciary that has already allowed reactionary Texas judges to reverse critical decisions of the Federal Trade Commission and the National Labor Relations Board.
Don’t miss the opportunity to gather our forces under one roof at the Longhorn Ballroom at 8:30AM on September 2. Details are on our web site. If you don't have your $40 ticket or $350 organization table yet, send a check to Dallas AFL-CIO, 1408 N. Washington Ave. #240, Dallas, TX 75204 or pay online at https://square.link/u/Pfw3iALZ. Fortunately for America, we are growing stronger in unity.
