Houston: Managing with Labor's Values Workshop

Can you be an effective manager while staying true to the values of the labor movement? Not only is it possible to manage staff without compromising on values, it is critical that managers at unions and workers centers get the training they need to become effective leaders and make the best use of limited resources. In the Managing with Labor's Values workshop, participants learn techniques for helping their staff succeed, keeping staff accountable, and responding appropriately to common staff management issues while honoring the values of the labor movement.

This two day training will be taught by faculty at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. 

Topics will include portions of the following, depending on need: 

  • Part 1: Helping Your Staff to Succeed

    • How managing in a union is unique
    • Assessing & adjusting management style to specific situations
    • Dealing with different behavioral styles
    • Giving effective feedback, coaching
    • Prerequisites for accountability

    Part 2: Building Accountability

    • Motivation
    • Tools for accountability, including reporting systems
    • Performance improvement plans
    • Team building

Target Audience: This workshop is open to leaders and staff directors of labor unions, federations, or workers centers with significant supervisory/managerial responsibilities. Authorization of a union officer is required.

Approach & Features

The workshop will include short presentations, case studies, small group work, group discussions and role play.  Participants will have an opportunity to discuss real challenges they face with peers in the workshops.  

Cost: $900 per participant for two days, due prior to workshop

Space availability: Registration is first come, first serve. It will close whenever the class fills or on March 20, whichever comes first. Maximum of 3 spots per affiliate. Attendance at both days is required.
