Training & Leadership Development

The Training and Leadership Development department plays a key role in the Texas AFL-CIO's investment in building and shaping a bigger, broader, and rising labor movement in the state of Texas!
Ruth Ellinger Leadership Academy
This one-year training program is a skill-building and leadership development course managed by the Texas AFL-CIO – in partnership with affiliate unions, local unions and Central Labor Bodies – to help grow and support the next generation of union leaders in Texas. The program is open to union members who live and work in Texas who are nominated by their Local, International, or Central Labor Body. Program participants attend four weekend-long training sessions over the course of a year covering topics like the basics of organizing, shifting power, and intersectionality in the labor movement.
The 2027 Ruth Ellinger Leadership Academy application process will begin in the Fall of 2026.
AFL-CIO Organizing Institute
The Organizing Institute’s mission is to train union organizers to monumental wins that grow the labor movement. The AFL-CIO has trained tens of thousands of member activists and staff organizers on the best practices and principles that are key to workers winning respect, dignity and a voice at work through organizing a union. Whether you’re a new organizer or already leading campaigns, the Organizing Institute is the go-to source to learn the skills to run successful campaigns.
