Politics & Policy

The Texas AFL-CIO develops messaging and hands-on programs that move workers to action, elect pro-labor candidates, and support union members running for office. Our success at the Legislature builds a better Texas.
At the ballot box, we elect political candidates who will fight for working people. We also help train union members to run for office. Political endorsements for federal, statewide, and legislative candidates are made through our Committee on Political Education (COPE) with input from labor bodies across the state.
At the Texas Capitol, the Texas AFL-CIO fights for policies that help all workers improve their lives and communities, and opposes legislation not in line with our Fair Shot agenda. The agenda supports:
- high-quality public education,
- expanded health coverage for all Texans,
- the creation of union jobs in emerging industries,
- racial justice,
- and stronger workplace standards.
Legislative policies are developed in concert with our affiliates, the United Labor Legislative Committee, and our Executive Board.
