Job Opening: Rio Grande Valley Field Organizer 

The Texas AFL-CIO is a statewide labor federation and serves as the leading voice for working families in Texas. The Texas AFL-CIO is seeking a dedicated Field Organizer to work with union leadership, staff and affiliates to build a bigger, broader and more powerful labor movement in the state of Texas, and especially in the Rio Grande Valley. We are looking for someone who wants to make a difference in our movement and in our state through organizing, legislative, and political activities. 

Responsibilities include

  • Work creatively and with purpose every day to build a bigger, bolder and broader labor movement in the state of Texas, particularly in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Specifically, work to build out the infrastructure of the labor movement in the Rio Grande Valley. 

  • Work with Texas AFL-CIO Leadership and staff, along with Central Labor Council leadership, and affiliates to identify leaders and resources to build organizational capacity. 

  • Identify and develop trusted relationships with key union leaders and allied organizations in the Rio Grande Valley. 

  • Identify, recruit and manage volunteers and coordinate resources in the Rio Grande Valley. 

  • Work with the Texas AFL-CIO leadership and staff to design and carry out programmatic plans in targeted areas in coordination with Central Labor Council leadership, staff and affiliates. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have the following: 

  • Demonstrated strong commitment to the goals and mission of the labor movement. 

  • Reliable transportation is required. Position is based in the Rio Grande Valley, but may require some travel to other parts of the state. 

  • We have a vibrant, supportive workplace that is attentive to the needs of those who work here, however, it is not an easy job, and willingness to, at times, work long, irregular hours and some weekends is important. 

  • Excellent organizational skills, the ability to work independently and yet function effectively as part of a coordinated team. 

  • Computer literacy in the context of organizing campaign work. 

  • Experience with unions, organizing, volunteer recruitment and coordination, and field work. 

  • Familiarity with issues faced by those living in the Rio Grande Valley. 

  • Bilingual capacity in English/Spanish. 

This position will be funded pursuant to a solidarity grant and has a very competitive salary ($62,500/yr.) and benefits package pursuant to a collective bargaining agreement with OPEIU Local 277including fully paid health care, vacation, sick days, holidays.
